There are 65 Mining Waste Dumps in Natural Protected Areas

In addition to the 65 mining waste dumps located within 17 federal and state Natural Protected Areas in Mexico, there are another 157 mining waste dumps located within a radius of 1 to 5 km from these areas.

The existence of this type of hazardous waste within the country's protected areas represents a danger to these spaces, which have been expressly protected to guarantee the conservation of hundreds of species (flora and fauna) at risk. Natural Protected Areas protect natural environments that are fundamental to the culture and national identity, especially of the native people that inhabit them.
